The initial design concept for relaxation spaces was the unused areas within the shopping center Citypark that would offer visitors the opportunity for a short break and rest during their visit.
In the first phase of the project, we introduced a concept based on the shape of a circle. The circle has always been a shape to which people naturally gravitate; within the circle, one finds a sense of comfort, safety, community, and, not least, the circle has always been a space for the exchange of thoughts and ideas.
The Gao architects' team, together with the architect of the shopping center, designed a project that complements the organic shape of the circle with a natural color palette. This palette provides a counterbalance to the vibrant offerings of the shops and restaurants. Thus, the resting areas are not just structures that provide seating but oases where people can truly find tranquility and enjoy a brief respite within the circular shelter.
In designing these corners, we aimed to offer visitors a pleasant space that provides shelter, comfort, and aesthetic pleasure. Simultaneously, we considered the client's wishes and needs for these structures to be modular. With the craftsmanship of Mizarstvo Trunkelj, which took care of the technical implementation, we fulfilled the desire for assemblies that can be moved and adapted to the activities within the shopping center. We also considered that the selected furniture and decor are aesthetically interesting on their own while being neutral enough to incorporate seasonal decorations and decor changes that occur with the seasons, holidays, and events.
The final product consists of comfortable, leather seating sets that exude a sense of organic warmth and practicality. They offer easy maintenance and durability, essential components for structures intended for frequent use. The expanded metal mesh, designed in circles, acts as a transparent barrier between the relaxation area and shopping, providing a sense of shelter and separation without isolating visitors completely. The metal circles from the mesh also serve as a pleasant visual addition, adding the finishing touch to the space. The circles also function as reference points, allowing visitors to quickly connect form and function.
After the successful completion of the first phase, where visitors positively embraced the renovated relaxation areas, we extended the theme of organic design and aesthetic oases to all the remaining benches throughout the shopping center. This unified Citypark's appearance and improved comfort for an even more enjoyable experience for visitors.
The project has a sustainable aspect as well, as we did not replace the existing benches with new furniture. Instead, we repainted the original benches, lowered the existing seats, and added new seating. The old benches have thus become modern and attractive, following the latest trends in interior design.
